Darker is very different from the first book in the series, Dark. Damien definitely has his dark side and has good reason, but he’s more grounded. His fake marriage to Maria test him to his limits of patience. She does everything to get attention. You might start thinking she’s a “brat” and wonder why Damien puts up with her, but he is clearly taken with her Despite her demanding personality.
I liked Maria, but Damien really makes this book. First he tries to resist her, and she pushes his buttons, then he starts to waver, and she pushes his buttons, then he gives her anything she asks for, and she pushes us buttons. He protects her from other men, sometimes from herself, and from the danger that is caused by the mystery surrounding her.
Despite being told he can not touch in this fake marriage, he does, and then vows not to let her go. The danger finds them and he has to protect her. I will definitely read the next book about Dean who we meet briefly near the end of Darker.
