This book had a mood. Despite the drive for passion and romance, Vanessa and Simon both come from a dark, morose place. They each have their own reasons for being emotionally guarded yet try to have a normal relationship with family and friends.
It does help to know what happened in the previous books because Simon’s brothers and sister are very much part of this story.
So, it is a book with a lot of dialog but a very somber mood even during the “good times”. As a reader you keep going because the story is compelling yet keep hoping for when that dark cloud drifts away.
