THE MARRIAGE PACT is one of the “if neither of us is married by thirty…” stories combined with the second chance, best friend’s brother, and boss tropes. Landon broke Poppy’s heart with words. She broke his by leaving without letting him explain and 9 years later Landon’sister (Poppy’s best friend) does some manipulating to get them back together.
It’s a fairly typical story with some little plot enhancers like Poppy’s vegan “free spirited” parents vs Landon’s kind of judgmental parents. Side by side they couldn’t be more different, so that added to the conflict in the past. Will it continue to add to the conflict in the present?
I did think from the dialog that the characters seemed less mature than their ages suggested (27 and 30). I wondered if their maturity had them stuck in the past at the time they hurt one another. From that perspective, it was interesting to move through the story to see what the passage of time would change.
